Mitchell Falls is the highlight of the Kimberley for a lot of our guests, and when you see it in full flow it is obvious why. Four tiers dropping into a series of pools, in country almost nobody reaches by road.
It is all about the water
The falls are fed by the wet season, which officially runs from October to April but in practice delivers most of its rain between mid-December and mid-March. By May the roads have dried out enough to travel, but the water is still running hard.
By late August the flow has dropped considerably. The walk is still worth doing and the plateau is still remarkable, but the falls themselves are a different sight in May than in August.
That is why we only run to the falls between May and August, and why our earliest departures book out first.
Getting there
The track to the Mitchell Plateau is remote and rough — genuinely corrugated, which is why our coaches run upgraded suspension. We break the journey with two nights camped on the King Edward River, which gives you swimming, a rest, and time at the Munurru rock art galleries.
The walk into the falls takes a few hours each way through Livistona palms, with river crossings and swimming spots along the route. We include a helicopter flight one way for every guest, which is the only way to see all four tiers at once.
If you are a slower walker, talk to your guide. Plenty of guests fly both directions and enjoy the day just as much.
